The Rocky Mountain Arsenal and Rocky Flats sites, both within 20 miles of Denver, were, by the 1980s, among the most contaminated sites on the planet. Home to nerve gas and pesticide production during and after WWII, and following a $2.1 billion cleanup, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal is now 24 square mile National Wildlife Refuge including open prairie with abundant wildlife. Rocky Flats is a former nuclear weapons plant that required nearly $7 billion to remediate. Rocky Flats was transferred to the US Fish and Wildlife Service as National Wildlife Refuge in 2007. Presented by Howard Kenison, this luncheon presentation will provide a brief history of the operations of these sites and the rocky path from contamination to trails, recreation and open space.
